Overview

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. In the laboratory it is the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilized peptides, where the preservative inhibits microbial growth across repeated withdrawals from a multi-use vial.

How it’s studied to work

The benzyl alcohol content is bacteriostatic — it suppresses bacterial growth — which is why it is preferred over plain sterile water for solutions accessed more than once.
